Distortion – A Fresh Take on Kinetic Art
While most kinetic sculptures stick to the usual formula—rotating spokes spinning around a center—Distortion breaks the mold. This is the first piece in my collection (and one of the few out there) that ditches the spokes entirely and still delivers a mesmerizing, pulsing visual effect. Instead, Distortion features a rotating outer ring connected by wavy, fluid lines that create a whole new kind of motion—subtle, hypnotic, and unlike anything you’ve seen before.
I’ve designed Distortion with a clean, minimalist look by trimming down the frame so the pattern wheels can take the spotlight. The result? A modern, floating appearance that feels light on the wall but heavy on impact.
And if you’re into customizing your space, you’ll love this: the winding pulley isn’t fixed. You can adjust its position anywhere below the pattern wheels to fit your style and layout preferences. It’s a small touch that adds a big dose of personality.
Mechanically, Distortion is built to last. I’ve chosen polished brass pins over the typical wooden ratchets you’ll find in lower-end pieces, not just for their durability, but because they add a little touch of elegance. The entire sculpture runs on a stainless steel constant force spring, paired with a steel spring belt—no rubber parts here to wear out or lose their stretch over time. Just smooth, reliable motion for years to come.
Winding it is easy and oddly satisfying. Just place your finger on one of the lower pulley’s spokes, turn it counterclockwise about 22 times, and release. The spring gives the first gentle push, and the wheels come alive. As the motion slows and reverses, the spring kicks in again—keeping the rhythm going without any need for batteries or plugs.
You can also personalize the sculpture with custom color options for the polymer-coated aluminum pattern wheels—tailored to your style and space.
And let’s not forget the woodwork. All the mechanical components are crafted from imported Baltic birch, left unpainted to showcase its natural grain. Each piece is hand-sanded, stained, and sealed with multiple coats of urethane to protect against sunlight and humidity—so the beautiful raw wood finish stays that way.
If you’re looking for something truly different—something that blends modern design, mechanical artistry, and a peaceful energy—Distortion is the piece you’ve been waiting for.
